As a new parent, you are flooded with tips and products. The good news: babies need a simple routine. Less is often more, as long as what you use is gentle and supports the skin barrier.
What you do need
- Gentle cleansing: lukewarm water is often enough. Only use a wash emulsion where necessary. A mild bath oil in the bath works great for this. Its most important function is to support the skin barrier.
- Protective balm or diaper cream: for very dry skin, red diaper rash, or as a preventative measure at every diaper change.
- Moisturizer: for dry or flaky skin, for example in the first weeks or months. This can be in the form of a balm, oil, or cream/lotion.
- Soft textiles: cotton clothing and fragrance-free laundry detergent are recommended.
What you can skip (for now)
- Extensive product lines with many steps
- (Strongly) perfumed lotions or oils
- Daily full baths. Two to three times a week is sufficient for many babies. Too many baths dry out the skin quickly and increase the chance of red spots!
Four-step routine
- Cleanse gently with water or a mild bath oil.
- Pat dry, do not rub.
- Apply a thin layer of protective or moisturizing care where the skin needs it.
- Dress in breathable clothing.
